Opening Hook
NIFTY & BANKNIFTY Closing Analysis 21 August 2026: After Thursday’s strong recovery, Friday’s market action gave traders something equally useful: the market held most of the gains.
NIFTY could not extend the rally much, but it did not give up the bounce either. More importantly, BANKNIFTY continued to outperform and closed near the day high.
The Sensex settled flat at 77,540.83, up by a mere 3.11 points. The NIFTY 50 gained 20.15 points or 0.08% to close at 24,252.00.
BANKNIFTY was strong with a jump of 266.05 points or 0.46% to 57,761.95.
Friday’s message was not simply that the rally is gathering momentum.”
It was more nuanced. Buyers are standing their ground, and banks are taking the lead.

Today’s Market in Simple Words
Friday turned out to be a consolidation day after the significant bounce we described in our closing analysis of NIFTY & BANKNIFTY on 20 August.
NIFTY was trading in a close range of approximately 24,207 to 24,284. Crude oil was still high, and global bond yields continued to make risk assets uncomfortable, and traders remained wary.
The rupee settled practically steady at around ₹95.69 per US dollar, with RBI intervention helping to avert a slip below the psychologically crucial ₹96 mark.
Thursday was a relief. Friday was that relief.
It did – but not convincingly.
NIFTY View
NIFTY finished at 24,252.00, hovering above the 24,200 level for most of Friday’s session.
That’s building on the seven-session losing skid we noted in our 19 August closing analysis.
The technical fight is pretty straightforward.
On Friday, the intraday low was 24,206.80, and the first support zone was at 24,200–24,210. On the upside, the index fought near its session high of 24,284.05, with 24,284-24,300 as the first resistance level.
A strong break above 24,300 could open the door to 24,350-24,400.
Below 24,200, traders should again watch 24,100.
BANKNIFTY View
BANKNIFTY was the most compelling index of Friday.
It added 0.46% to settle at 57,761.95, having traded between 57,481.55 and 57,772.45.
The closure near the day’s high suggests that even as NIFTY was range-bound, buying demand continued to come in banking stocks.
Private banks were very helpful, with Kotak Mahindra Bank and ICICI Bank among the biggest contributors.
The immediate first barrier is about 57,800.
If BANKNIFTY manages to clear that zone decisively, then the next psychological test is at 58,000. Then immediate support sits at 57,500, followed by 57,250.
Sector and Breadth Check
The sector picture on Friday was mixed, not broadly bullish.
Strong points include:
- NIFTY Metal: +0.86%
- BANKNIFTY: +0.46%
- NIFTY Realty: +0.40%
Of the less strong sectors:
- NIFTY FMCG: -0.74 %
- NIFTY Auto: -0.60%
- NIFTY IT: -0.46 %
Seven of the twelve tracked main sectors moved higher, while five slipped.
Markets generally, nevertheless, stayed reasonably robust. NIFTY Midcap 100 was up 0.10% at 63,735.75, while smallcaps also closed in positive territory.
That conforms to the selective-market pattern we highlighted in our weekly NIFTY & BANKNIFTY wrap-up for 14 August.
Option Chain and India VIX Signal
Friday’s option-chain positioning provides us a good map for Monday.
Maximum Call OI for the expiry of 25 August NIFTY was seen at 24,300, while maximum Put OI was at 24,000.
Interestingly, the biggest move in OI on both sides was also at 24,300.
So that beefs up 24,300 as the next spot on the battlefield.
Spot ended at 57,761.95. The BANKNIFTY 58,000 Call had huge open interest, giving the round number level an important resistance zone.
India VIX is up 4.09% at 11.20.
The percentage move is big, but in absolute terms the VIX is still somewhat muted. This implies more prudence on weekends, not outright dread.
Traders are advised to avoid large positions with Tuesday’s monthly expiry coming up. Our Position Size Calculator may convert a risk in rupees to an appropriate number of trades.
Support and Resistance
| Index | Support | Resistance |
|---|---|---|
| NIFTY | 24,200 / 24,100 | 24,300 / 24,400 |
| BANKNIFTY | 57,500 / 57,250 | 57,800 / 58,000 |
What Traders Should Watch on Monday
The first question for August 24, 2026: Can NIFTY finally cross 24,300?
If it holds above that level, Thursday’s bounce would look more convincing.
Second, look at BANKNIFTY around 57,800-58,000. One of the biggest positive indications in the current market is leadership in banking.
Third, watch crude oil, global bond yields and the rupee. Elevated oil prices continue to pose a significant macro risk for India, particularly in the event that the rupee approaches or surpasses ₹96/USD.
IndiaMoneyGuru Takeaway
Friday was not a thrilling session but a useful one.
NIFTY maintained Thursday’s bounce.
BANKNIFTY further strengthened.
Mid-caps and small caps continued to show resilience.
But the India VIX surged higher, and NIFTY could not clear 24,300.
That puts the market in recovery, not a verified breakout yet.
Traders don’t need to predict where the entire week will go for Monday. NIFTY – Watch 24,200 vs 24,300; BANKNIFTY – Watch 57,500 vs 58,000.
Those levels should tell us a lot more than forecasts will.
